I attach the external drive and clone the OS or Data to it as an archived backup about every couple of months. My typical setup has 4 drives: OS (on an SSD), Data, OS backup, and Data backup. 10 drives or so, in toto, plus 4 or 5 external USB 3.0 drives used for occasional archive backups. I have 3 desktops, each with varying numbers of drives. However, my INTERNAL drives shouldn't be affected by this, right? Obviously, this is a subject I'm still grappling with. I read that, and yes, I do use USB 3.0 external enclosures for backups. The problem you are experiencing is caused by external USB enclosures USB to SATA bridge 'faking' native sector size of 4k. All disks on the market today support Advanced format 512e. The sector size of a disk is in the firmware of the disk/controller and cannot be changed. Is there any way to change my disks to 4k sectors? I read that earlier, but I'd thought it only applied to cloning. An explanation is provided in the same KB article. If I can do that, I can get all my disks formatted to 4k sectors.Īccording to the compatible disks table in this KB article, a 512 (or 512e) source sector size is not compatible with a 4096 target sector size, and that applies to both clone and restore operations.
Reformat Current Backup (512) to Current Backup (4k) Use Current Backup (512) to restore image to New disk (4k) Image OS disk (512) to Current Backup disk (512). Cloning won't work, since it has to copy sector to sector. My understanding is that going to 4k sectors would be more efficient. I've checked System Information, and all my disks have 512 byte sectors. I've got multiple hard drives in multiple machines.
