Our boys need to know that our girls deserve to be respected for holding true to who they are. Our girls needs to know that it's okay to look up to a smart girl who fights for and stands up for herself. Seems to work for historical romance novels, right? Disney needs to know we want Merida as she was first presented to us and our children.
Now that she's going to be official, Disney wants to do away with Merida the Brave because they seem to think only Merida the Sexy will sell merchandise. Gone are the adorably realistic round face, the wide blue eyes, and the refreshingly makeup free complexion, and the wild, unkempt curls. Let's hope she doesn't have access to a mirror after the coronation, because the girl our children look up to won't recognize the face staring back at her. Merida won the hearts of young girls everywhere as the bow-carrying, spirited, independent, and self-assured heroine who bravely looked within and found her fate.
On May 11, Disney will officially crown Merida - of the popular Brave animated feature - as the 11th princess.
